Italians, Americans and Canadians are leading a global run on sex toys amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to one high-end maker of erotic gear.

According to sex toy brand Womanizer, global sales of its devices have surged since the start of the year as people prepare for self-isolation.

Demand beating expectations
The company, which retails its own toys for between $49 and $199 (£40-£161), claimed global demand is currently 50 per cent above what it had previously expected.

Between the first day of January and 6 March, sales in Italy are trending 60 per cent above forecast.

Demand among Canadians has surged the most, surging 135 per cent higher than expectations, while their neighbours in the US are buying at a rate 75 per cent above predictions.

'Making the best use of the time'

Johanna Rief, head of sexual empowerment at Womanizer said: “Of course, we didn’t anticipate a surge in sales of Womanizer due to corona. Many people and businesses are affected negatively by the virus and we saw it as a challenge for us as well.

"The numbers are therefore surprising. We do know from our customer’s feedback as well as different surveys we conducted among our sex toy tester panel that time is an essential factor when it comes to sexuality and self-pleasure. With the prospect of long periods at home either alone or with your partner, people are exploring new ways to make the best of the time available.”

Up-to-date figures were not available for the UK, but some initial data showed a 13 per cent increase in British shoppers ordering the goods in February compared to January. In the same period, sales in Hong Kong surged higher by a whopping 71 per cent.

However some of those surges could have been linked to Valentine’s Day.

It comes after Chinese consumers started snapping up condoms last month, as well as yoga mats and video games, as they prepared to stay inside for a long period.
